Stock Dog Training
I specialised in training working stock dogs for everyday work of livestock (Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Pigs, Chicken, etc.).
Whether for private use on a small flock of sheep or on a large farm, I will either find a dog or help you to train your dog that fits your needs and make him an irreplaceable asset to your farm!
I offer stock dog training on sheep and cattle for stock dog breeds in form of one-on-one lessons, clinics, One-Day-Workshops, training of your dog, as well as clinics with external trainers from Europe, USA and other countries.
I will help you start and work your stock dog and will be there for you, if problems occure or will test, if your dog will work stock (must be a stock dog breed!). You might also let me train your dog from start to finish.
As a trainer, I want to meet you and your dogs at your level of training and making progress as fast as possible, but as slow as necessary!!
I want both of you to learn and understand what when to do and get the most out or your stock dog, without loosing the joy of working together.
For Training I keep Dorper, Forest Sheep and Skudden all year round and a small herd of cattle during the summer (April to October).
In order to learn the basics and to build up and strengthen the self-confidence of the dog, I start all dogs on sheep first, before introducing them to cattle.
My training facility includes: 17m covered Roundpen, 20x40m inside arena, 130 x 75 m fenced in pasture, 2ha and 4ha open field.
I really want to emphasize that a careful and low stress handling of the stock is absolutely important to me!! A certain basic obedience of the dog therefore is required. If this is missing, we will work on this first.
Wild chasing of Livestock is a No-Go.
Stock Dogs
Stock dogs are a huge asset for every ranch!!
I so love stock dogs ´cause they make life on the ranch and working livestock so much easier. Depending on the work they can replace up to 4 employees.
No matter whether it´s a dairy farm, a feedlot or breeding farm, no matter if used in the corrals, out in the open range or for loading cattle for shipping or push them in a headgate for doctoring.
You can also work other livestock like sheep, goats, pigs, ducks and more with a stock dog.
If the livestock is not used to be worked by dogs, you have to "break them in", means nothing more, than get them used to it.
Therefore you need a very well trained and strong stock dog.
Breaking in the herd might seem a little "chatotic" in the beginning, especially for people not used to see or use stock dogs on livestock.
There´s always some animals of the herd facing or attacking the dog.
Like mentioned above, you need a dog, which is mentally strong, physically fit and very well trained, to not make the herd totally mad and get the herd dog broke with as low stress as possible.
It totally makes sense, to split a bigger herd in smaller groups the get them used to a dog. It might seem a lot of work in the begining, but in the end, it´ll be a lot quicker for the stock to learn move away from the dog, because each animal will have more contact to the dog in a shorter period of time.
The job of the handler is to know exactly, when to put preassure to the stock and when to take it off of them.
Usually it won´t take long for the livestok to understand to not fight the fight the dog, but to move away from it.
From this moment it´s make your daily work so much easier and after a little while you won´t be able to imagine your daily routine withourt your dog as a Co-Worker anymore.

Stock Dog Trials
The most known use for Stock/Sheepdogs in Europe is on Sheep as a Farm Dog and/or at Sheepdog Trials. Significantly more unknown are Stock Dog Trials which are usually held on cattle on foot or horseback.
I love stock dogs and stock dog trials from the bottom of my heart, because they´re very much based on everydays work with the dogs on the farm or ranch. The course is variable in design and obstacles and the scoring is usually a little easier to follow.
Scoring: You will get 5 points for each head of catlle (respectively sheep) follow the correct path through the obstacles. There will be a time limit for the whole course, so if there will be a tie, the faster time will win. The way from one obstacle to the next ususally will not be scored (exceptions possible).
In order to ensure stress free work with the stock running on foot and loping on horseback is prohibited and will result in penalties each time it happens.
There will be a handlers meeting before the first start. All participants walk the course with the judge and can ask all questions they want (Scoring, 2nd try of an obstacle, etc.), so there will be no misunderstanding about the correct direction of the course, the scoring, etc..
I really hope l´ll be able to offer stock dog trials on cattle (and sheep) at some point in the future.
I want to support the fun without losing the character of a tournament..
My biggest goal is, to bring people with the same passion together, enjoy working our dogs and have fun.
Information about Sheepdog Trials
(Training currently only with external trainers)
The first Sheepdog Trial took place in Wanaka, New Zealand in 1867.
The United Kingdom followed only 6 years later and the first Sheepdog Trial was held with 10 dogs and 300 visitors in Bala, Wales.
From that time on the competition idea spread to England and Scotland pretty fast. Nowadays the sport is known across the borders.
As the name suggests, these herding dog tests are performed on sheep.
In general, Sheepdog Trials include the following elements:

The dog must bring a certain number of sheep to the Handler in a certain manner from a long distance (depending on the performance class). (Outrun, Lift, Fetch).

The herding dog now has to drive the herd away from the handler (Drive).

This is usually followed by a cross-drive where the dog has to drive the herd in a straight line from one side to the other.

Dog and Handler should also be able to load the sheep in a Pen or Trailer (Pen)
Further elements could be:

The dog and handler must separate two animals from the herd and keep them separated for a short period of time. (Shedding).

In the "single" dog and handler must separate a single sheep from the herd and temporarily keep away from it.
Working sheep precise and quiet is absolutely necessary and required to be succesful in completing a Sheepdog Trialing.
